Explore a Timeless Tradition
The United Arab Emirates, particularly Ras Al Khaimah, boasts an extraordinary pearl fishing history that spans over seven millennia. Archaeologists have found evidence of a thriving pearl industry in Ras Al Khaimah as early as the 12th century, marking the region as a pivotal trading port due to its valuable pearls.
To celebrate this rich heritage, Abdulla Al Suwaidi founded Suwaidi Pearl Farm in memory of his grandfather, Mohammed. Abdulla’s childhood was filled with awe as he watched his grandfather dive into the depths, emerging with precious, lustrous pearls prized by royalty. These memories fueled Abdulla’s passion for preserving this near-extinct tradition.
The Tradition Continues
Today, pearl fishing remains a cherished tradition in the UAE. Historically, men would dive for pearls using turtle shell nose clips, ear plugs made of wax, and sustaining themselves on dates and coffee. Each member of the pearl diving crew had a vital role, ensuring the safety and efficiency of their community. Entry into these tight-knit groups was strictly regulated by local rulers.
